Everything you have been working toward for the past two to four (or more) years is coming to a head.
You all have Tuesday July 18th circled on your calendars. If you are walking, you have invited family, friends, and mentors to attend commencement. Perhaps you have big travel plans already lined up for the weeks afterward.
In all the excitement, however, please do not forget some very important deadlines and things to get out of the way before the big day. Here is a quick checklist of what you need to get done.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]

Many students receive the unpleasant surprise that they are one or two credits shy of what they need. The school recommends you do this 1-2 semesters in advance so you can plan accordingly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]
Apply before June 14
Yes, that is two days from now. If you haven’t applied for graduation and wish to walk, you need to apply by this Wednesday, June 14. The final date to submit an application for graduation is July 25, but of course, by that point commencement will be complete. If you have people coming into town to see you walk, make sure you are able to.
You can apply for graduation when you visit your personal Grad Planner.
Get your cap, gown, and tassel
You can provide your own or pre-order through Herff-Jones for early bird pricing. Here, you can also get memorabilia such as announcements, a diploma frame, or a class ring. Be sure to order what you need before next Tuesday, June 20 to get the best prices. According to the website, any purchases made for spring commencement after that date may incur additional charges.
Obtain commencement tickets
Commencement tickets do not cost any money, but you need to make sure you have enough reserved in plenty of time. The sooner, the better. Find out how many of your people plan on attending, nail that number down, and visit the Ticket Office to reserve your tickets. Grandma came all the way up for you, don’t leave her in the lobby.
Make plans for Grad Night/Grad Fest
Receive a proper send off the night before graduation, July 17 at 7 p.m., from President Henry J. Eyring. Spouses are invited, and Sunday dress is appropriate. Grad Night is “a night of reflection and celebration.” Graduates will also receive an alumni gift.
Grad Fest is the same day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All graduates, regardless of whether you are walking at commencement or not, are invited to attend. Here you will pick up your name card for convocation and confirm that the university has your proper mailing address to send your diploma. You can also purchase more memorabilia, enter to win prizes, and partake of refreshments. It is a very good time.
Prepare for post-grad life
Whether it’s grad school or employment, your undergraduate degree is not the end-all-be-all of your education. Alas, it is just a stepping stone. But by all means, give yourself a huge pat on the back. You may go on a cruise; you may just go out for ice cream. But you have made an incredible step. You are remarkable![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Be proactive, and knock out these final few steps to prepare yourself for graduation.
