Chicken Nuggets

Nuggets, Nuggies, Chicken Bites, and Nugs. From the time I was a little kid I’ve loved chicken nuggets. These little bites of fried chicken are more valuable than the gold nuggets that they take their name from. Maybe I’m being a bit dramatic. But no lie, chicken nuggets are one of my favorite foods. And luckily, most places have a large selection to choose from. Rexburg is no exception. But, as avid nugget enthusiasts know, not every nugget is created equal. Here’s a comparison to find the best chicken nuggets in Rexburg.

Burger King – 5.3/10

When I was in elementary school they showed us a documentary about how things are made. I got to see the molds that they made Legos in and the process to make candy. But I’ll never forget the clips of how Burger King used to make chicken nuggets. All the excess chicken cuts and ligaments were blended together. Then the resulting paste was poured into molds to make bite sized nuggets. I’ve never been able to look at Burger King nuggets since. Personally I think they taste like sawdust. But several people I’ve talked to love them. Burger King possibly updated their recipe, but in my opinion their nuggets are mid-rate at best.

McDonald’s – 6.9/10

McDonald's fries are so-so.

Most memories I have of chicken nuggets come from McDonalds. I might be biased, but I would be lying if I didn’t say they were great. It really depends on when you get them. If they’re fresh, McDonald’s chicken nuggets are some of the best you’ll get. When you get them later they’re nothing to turn your nose up at, but not top notch either. If you want to get freshly cooked nuggets, you’ll want to go either early in the morning or late at night. Which works out perfectly if you’re headed to Mc-Midnight! We have two McDonalds in Rexburg. But the one near FatCats is the better of the two. It gets more foot traffic, so there’ll be a wait. But they also need to make more food so it’s more likely to be fresh.

Chick-fil-A – 8.1/10

Chick Fil A is celebrating Cow Appreciation Day on July 10.

These chicken nuggets are on another level. First off, you can tell that they’re real, individual cuts of chicken. No doubt about that. Second, each nugget is fried extremely well and tastes delicious with the assorted sauces. These nuggets would be the best in Rexburg, but there’s a few issues. For one thing, they’re only available in the BYU-Idaho Crossroads. Which wouldn’t be a problem, except it’s always busy. So you’re waiting a long time for “fast food”. Then the quality of Chick-fil-A’s food has always been a little lackluster at the Crossroads location. For some reason every time I eat campus Chick-fil-A it tastes like chicken from a can, overly salty like it’s been soaked in broth. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still good. But if you compare a regular location with the one in Rexburg, I think you’d agree it’s much better. Overall, the nuggets are good. Just not as good as they could be.

Wendy’s – 8.8/10

Wendy's North Rexburg

Out of all regular fast food restaurants, Wendy’s takes the cake. The food tastes fresher than most and the nuggets are no exception. Wendy’s nuggets taste great. They’re simple, filling and have a good texture to them.  My only complaint is that there aren’t as many sauce options as McDonalds or Chick-fil-a. But for the most part, they don’t need it. The location in Rexburg is great, and I hear we’re getting a second soon. So if you’re looking for consistent great nuggets swing by Wendy’s.
