The need for hormone therapy revolves around one simple concept: our hormones control almost everything our body does. Think of them as messengers that relay instructions between the organs. Hormones specifically don’t carry out the functions, but they keep the rest of your body on task.
Sometimes, certain hormones become depleted or augmented and result in a hormonal imbalance. The impact of this condition on the body ranges from minimal to severe, but must always receive attention.
To do so, it is important that we more fully understand the role of hormones and how maintaining a healthy hormonal balance can enrich your life.
What do hormones do?
On a physiological level, hormones control much of what we feel. Each gland produces hormones that carry out a specific function. Hormones, through the endocrine system, manage behavior, development, reproduction, and basically everything.
Hormones act as messengers. After secreting from their respective glands into the bloodstream, they travel to different parts of the body to give instruction. Since hormones regulate most of our physiological as well as psychological functions, an imbalance compromises our very ability to live a healthy life.
A proper hormone balance allows the body to operate at its highest efficiency.
A healthy hormone balance boosts brain function.
The brain’s ability to function depends largely on a proper hormone balance. As a principal and complicated organ, the brain relies on these critical messengers to behave properly. Hormonal imbalances can contribute to cognitive issues such as a shortened attention span, memory gaps, and losing one’s train of thought.
Foods that are rich in antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids will encourage hormonal health. Getting enough sleep nightly and regular daily exercise are also good for your hormones. In general, a healthy lifestyle promotes a proper hormone balance and therefore a boost in brain function.
A healthy hormone balance protects your OS.
In a 2016 TedxIdahoFalls talk, Ann Washburn compares the body to a computer’s operating system. We like to think the same applies to maintaining a proper hormone balance. The more balanced your hormone levels, the higher you function — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Hormones keep your body running smoothly. They help fight harmful bacteria and viruses and promote an overall clean function, which includes feeling good and a more youthful appearance.
Because all hormones play a different but important role, an imbalance can range from drowsiness and fatigue to severe behavioral and health disorders. Restoring a hormonal imbalance must always be a high priority. Often our bodies will send us notifications as to how we are performing and to alert us to any danger. These notifications aren’t always as conspicuous as a pop-up window, however, so it is important for us to be vigilant over our bodies.
Hormone therapy is one way to maintain a healthy balance.
It’s easy to talk about “maintaining a healthy hormone balance,” but the doing isn’t always so simple. While all are susceptible to imbalances, women especially are at risk due to the high number of changes their bodies can go through. And for all, the symptoms can be devastating.
Hormone therapy is a safe method of treatment that, over time, can help balance hormone levels.
How does hormone therapy work?
Compressed pellets packed with the necessary hormones are inserted under the skin and slowly release these hormones around the clock. This treatment is repeated every three to six months, according to the patient’s needs, until the levels are consistently at their optimal level.
How is it administered?
The compressed pellet implants are roughly the size of a grain of rice. The “insertion” of the procedure involves a small, half-inch incision (with local anesthetic) in the lower hip into which the attendant inserts the pellet. Here, the pellets will slowly dissolve and do their work.
While proper nutrition and self-care are always necessary, hormone therapy is a good way to get your body back on track. You need a solid, hormonal balance in order to keep everything functioning smoothly.
