Many BYU-I students who have experienced a Rexburg winter are probably familiar with an email that goes something like this:
Dear Tenant,
As you know, it’s snowed a ton. Tomorrow morning, snow plows will be coming to plow the parking lot. Make sure to move your vehicle. They’ll be here until 11 am.
Sincerely,
Management
Explore Rexburg would like to remind you of one place that you should not park your vehicle overnight: the street.
As of today, December 15, overnight street parking is prohibited, specifically between 2 and 7 a.m. Rexburg Ordinance No. 1030 dictates:
“It shall be unlawful for any person to leave or store any automobile, truck, bicycle, wagon or other conveyance or vehicle, machine, implement or other item of personal property between the fifteenth (15) day of December of each year and the first (1st) day of March of the following year upon any street or alley in the City of Rexburg, Idaho, between the hours of 2:00 A.M. and 7:00 A. M.” (emphasis added)
The writer, along with fellow roommates and residents, learned this lesson the hard way a few years ago. And it is our intent now to protect your clean record and keep money in your pocket.
With the great influx and efflux of BYU-I students, it is easy for ordinances such as these to escape notice. For more parking and unrelated restrictions (such as Rexburg’s stance on snowballs), feel free to peruse the Rexburg City Ordinances.
Whether you need to move your car to make way for snow plows or have visitors coming into town, make sure your vehicles are off the street during the indicated time. Often, you are able to park overnight in church or other parking lots while the snow plows work but always check with your manager or the city before you assume anything.
