The great American car show returns
On June 17, a thoroughly American experience will be returning to Rexburg. Weeks before the 4th of July, a parade, and fireworks, Taylor Chevrolet will be setting the stage with a car show followed by a concert featuring country-western duo Branch and Dean.
The dealership, located on Yellowstone Highway, first hosted a car show in 1993, and it has been a tradition ever since.
“We had some employees that were part of the Corvette Club, and they wanted to pull it together,” says David Taylor, owner of Taylor Chevrolet. “It started out small and soon began changing and accommodating and growing into a real car show where we accepted classics.”
Hot rods, restorations, originals, and even a 1903 model have come through the Taylor Chevrolet lot over the years. Classic car owners from as far as Montana and Wyoming have come to share their pride and joy with the car lovers of Rexburg.
Lately, however, the number of registrants has grown so large that it has become hard to accommodate all eager participants.
“We’ve had upwards of 300 cars show up here and register and we just didn’t have enough room,” says Taylor.
Last year, instead of hosting the car show, Taylor Chevrolet supported the air show at the Rexburg Airport. Taylor says they plan on having the car show on an every-other-year basis, and will continue to support the air show as it occurs.
But 2017 is a car show year. Support for and from the community
With a history of free admission for the car shows, the Taylor Chevrolet Car Show is changing up the formula a little bit this year.
“It’s free and we’d like people to come and support it,” Taylor says. “And we decided that we would conduct the car show and then culminate it in the evening with a country-western concert.”
Taylor Chevrolet will be covering much of the cost of the car show, the food, and the concert. But the proceeds of ticket sales for the concert will go back into the community.
“We have hung our hats with the Fair Board, who is in great need of financial support to make improvements down there at the fairgrounds,” he says. “We have a minimum goal of raising $20,000 for the Fair Board. All tickets being sold, 100% of the proceeds go to the Fair Board.”
This philanthropy has caught the attention of the County Commissioners, who have subsequently pitched in money to the Fair Board as well. They are already making improvements at the fairgrounds, which will be the location of the car show in June.
“Everybody who brings a vehicle to the car show, I’m buying their two tickets to the concert,” Taylor says. “So we’re going to get a good crowd out for this.”
The car show will run from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Madison County Fairgrounds, and will be immediately followed by the Branch and Dean concert at the same location. Taylor invites those who wish to register their classic cars in the show to arrive between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
“We’ll check you in, get you all ready and situated, and all you have to do is have fun with your fellow car owners,” Taylor says. “We get some consistent shows, but I’m amazed at the difference and the complexion of the show every year.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
