You probably haven’t noticed, but the weather has changed in our little town. Jack Frost is not just nipping at your nose, homeboy is taking a freakin’ monster bite out of it. Rexburg has officially hit winter and I am colder than ever. Are you? Let’s put our winter woes aside for a second and focus on the benefits of cold weather. It’s not easy coming up with ideas for winter activities (because your brain is frozen), so I did it for you. Here are some of the best ways to take advantage of Rexburg’s current state.
Skiing at Targhee
If you are athletic, I hear skiing is really rad. Seriously though, I would love to try this popular winter sport. I didn’t grow up near mountains so skiing and snowboarding was never a part of my life. It looks like so much fun! I have some close friends who hit up Grand Targhee on the regs to shred. If you don’t want to go that far, you can always try out Kelly Canyon in Ririe. Take advantage of the resorts so close by and pick up a new hobby this season!
Paramount 5 Theater
The Paramount 5 Theater is the greatest thing to happen to Rexburg ever in my incredibly dramatic opinion. See a movie for a couple of bucks? You know I’m there! When it’s cold outside, all I want to do is stay inside and watch movies. Am I alone on this? Going to the theater makes me feel slightly less lazy than kickin’ it at home. Plus, add a bucket of popcorn and someone to snuggle with? That sounds ideal.
Ice Skating
To be real, I am so bad at ice skating it’s not even funny. I’d love to be as graceful as one of those girls in the movies that skates around an ice rink with their attractive man. Reality is, I’m uncoordinated and Mr. Right is taking his sweet time. If you’re about that ice skating life or want to be, check out Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena in Idaho Falls.
Skate in Parking Garages
I want to preface this one by saying I have never successfully skated in my life. However, I have some cool friends who do it all the time. If you skate in Rexburg, you already know the skate park gets snowy during this time of year. Next best option? Parking garage. Sure, the cars kind of get in the way, but the surface can’t be beat.
Stay Inside with a Book and Hot Cocoa
When it’s cold, all I want is to read a good book. I also want to drink unhealthy amounts of peppermint hot chocolate. My aesthetic is cozy, always. No shame in my game! I’m not sure what it is about winter weather, but when it’s overcast or snowy, and I’m under the covers reading a great book that I can’t put down, all is right in the world. Can you relate?
Game Night
Staying in with friends is great, but sometimes watching movies gets old. Shake it up and have a game night! Everybody has their favorite go-to board game. In my family, we play Yahtzee at basically every meal. My roommates and I love Wacky Six. Have all of your friends bring their favorites and make a night out of it! Not only one of the most fun indoor winter activities you get to see everyone’s true colors. Mine are red, purple, and competitive.
Movie Marathon
Movies are the optimal choice when it comes to cold weather social gatherings because they require minimal effort. Have you ever watched all the Lord of the Rings in a row? I haven’t but that’s impressive! Or maybe you’ve straight binged How I Met Your Mother because you just want Ted to finally frickin’ tell us! There are endless possibilities when it comes to marathons and with resources like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime we are living in the golden age of streaming #blessed.
